How does today's economy/financial crisis compare to that of the 1970s?

With new statistics showing alarming rates of poverty, I'm wondering how this era compares to the recession of the late 1970s in relation to how it has impacted the average american's day to day life.How does today's economy/financial crisis compare to that of the 1970s?
This is the worst since the Great Depression, by any metric
