After college I want to go into the movie business and work on building the sets for movies and our broadway type plays. I'm not so keen on the idea of living in hollywood or california for that matter. Are movies only made in the hollywood area? (I live in the midwest and don't want to stray to far)Do set designers for movies have to work in hollywood or near hollywood?About half the movies %26amp; television series are actually filmed in British Colombia, Canada because production costs are so much lower there.



California is not a friendly state to operate a business in. Over taxed, over regulated. so film crews tend to go to other cities, states, countries.Do set designers for movies have to work in hollywood or near hollywood?California is the most famous film making state in the country, and America is the most famous film making country in the world.



If you have no intention of living in California, I would suggest either New York City, New York (very costly) or Ann Arbor, Michigan. Knowing you are right out of college, it's more than likely that you are still paying off college... California is expencive. However, California shoots and produces more movies than anywhere else in the world, meaning that there are more jobs in that industry right there in Los Angeles. Though there are many job openings, there is a very high demand for jobs as set designers making it hard to find a stable job.



I had the same problem as a makeup artist from Michigan. I knew that the film industry was making it's way to Michigan after Michigan signed over the new Filming Tax Act making productions very cheap in cost to produce. But I knew that living in California was more logical for finding a job and staying employed year round.



I would also say, if you live in California, and work for a company like Fox, Warner Brothers, Searchlight or Paramount Pictures, they will need you on set often, but the thing is, if you're a set designer for either of these companies, and they are shooting something in Colorado or Texas, they will send you there with free stay and meals with the film crew to do the set: just as they do for me as a makeup artist.

If you're in the midwest your can try Louisiana or Michigan. Both of those states have burgeoning film production sectors. And while LA still has 50% of filming the two aforementioned states also have a lot of filming. new mexico too.
