We go to war and lots of anti-war movies come out because they reflect our nation's frustrations. I think many films educate the public on the political and social climate. Other films, like fantasy or action serve as a release or escape from these times. For instance, one might want to see Batman triumph over Joker when the worlds problems all seem more complicated than Good vs. Evil. Still, even in Batman, there was a reference to the Patriot Act with the surveillance system they divised and then destroyed out of a moral decision. It's an interesting question than has many examples and answers.
