What was the rule in early hollywood that made it so every bad guy in a movie had to loose?

my friend was talking about the book sister Carrie and said that the original version was changed because Hollywood at the time did not allow for the bad guy to win or the girl who had sex a lot to survive. I know there was a phrase for this or a specific rule but I cant remember what it is. Please help! What was the rule in early hollywood that made it so every bad guy in a movie had to loose?I think you mean the Hays Code. It went into effect in 1934 and persisted until the MPAA rating system was introduced. One of its general principles was:

"No picture shall be produced that will lower the moral standards of those who see it. Hence the sympathy of the audience should never be thrown to the side of crime, wrongdoing, evil or sin."
