Do Autralians really talk like Crocodile Dundee, or is it just a Hollywood stereotype?Do Autralians really talk like Crocodile Dundee, or is it just a Hollywood stereotype? The way Mick Dundee talks is an over exaggeration of Aussie slang, and definatly not how we talk
I live out woop woop (middle of nowhere, isolated, closest town is over 1000km's away) and even out here we dont talk like that.
We NEVER say anything about putting a shrimp on the barbie, its a prawn, and we dont go around saying thats not a knife this is, and we dont wrestle with crocs, shoot snakes for the hell of it etc.
I use a fair bit of slang, but its nothing like Mick Dundees slang, and its nothing like it says in all the tourists "Aussie English" dictionaries you can get. Those are full of crap
So yes, Its just a HOLLYWOOD STEREOTYPE.
And in Hollywood, us Aussies are generally portrayed as idiots.Do Autralians really talk like Crocodile Dundee, or is it just a Hollywood stereotype?

All answers above are 100% correct.
Unless we bump into a tourist, then the good old Aussie humour kicks in and we have a ball being a larrikin.
While we do have our own distinct accent and our own form of slang, no, most Australians don't speak like Crocodile Dundee.
Also, not everyone has kangaroos in their backyard (I actually do, though).
Interestingly, quite a few Australian actors who have gone overseas and played Australians on TV or in movies have gone on set and spoken in their normal Aussie accents - and been asked to "sound more Australian" by directors.
they really do. haven't watched crocodile dundee but i wouldn't doubt that he talks like steve erwin or something.
